News of Interest thread Empty News of Interest thread

Post by Lord Grey II Fri Sep 10, 2010 11:35 am

We've got an all encompassing thread for most everything else, so let's do one for news stories/articles that catch our attention and interest, share them! Discuss them! For the sake of being arbitrary, the articles ought to be news stories, political articles, or science articles. Vast range of things to work with there. :3

    I'll start with:

    Tractor beam invented!

The article wrote:You've seen it in 'Star Trek' and 'Star Wars' movies and shows, but did you ever think tractor beams were possible? Science fiction could be coming true as scientists at the Australian National University have discovered something amazing.

Researchers at the Australian National University have announced that they have built a device that moves particles with the power of light. They claim that these small particles can be moved a meter and a half.

Ok, so we're not moving anything big yet, but the future is upon us. I want my flying car.

Well if the sixties were any indication you should have a flying car. So why don't you?

flying cars aren't going to fix traffic, actually they could potentially make things worse.

airlines have strict flight paths set so they don't go crashing into each other. once flying cars come around it will be the same, we'll just have highways in the Sky's, that will still be filled with other flying cars. if they do invent flying cars however, i say keep them for emergency vehicles like police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, etc. That will probably save some lives.

I mention a real world tractor beam, give people the opportunity to discuss the implications and link other interesting stories...

... and we fly off in a completely different direction about a joking comment I made off the cuff at the end.

As for the tractor beam, wonder how long before some psycho... er... defence techlogy expert workin' for a certain branch of the government tries to weaponise it.

    Tinfoil hat time, children:

Have you ever considered that if superheros actually existed they would be quietly kidnapped by one government or another and then experimented on to see how their power works and if it could be applied to soldiers/scientists/spies etc.

Sceptical as I am, this seems to have a bit more scientific backing behind it than the usual doomsday fare, as well as not being all that, well, DOOMSDAY-ish. Guess we'll find out come 2012/3, eh?

Well nothing that involves the world going boom at least. Course it is possible that some random event could happen to make the world go pop and it just so happens to go along with the whole end of days bit.

Regardless there's no point in worrying about it because...well there's not a damn thing most of us can do about it.

if you can call hurricane Katrina doomsday-ish, maybe. the worst case scenario says large areas out for a few months that isn't too bad and most likely scenario is a few days. and it mentions that it is possible to take precautions against it. so if some thing did happen then there probably isn't too much to worry about.

They're glossin' over the real worst case senario, which is the solar flare bein' intense enough to burn off the atmosphere and turn the planet into a crispy ember. Also that the huge electro-magnetic pulse won't only shut down sections of powerlines, communications and other electronics, but will also potentially kill hundreds of people with pacemakers.
The magnetics in an magnetized escalator is enough to mess around with a pacemaker (one of mah friends has a pacemaker, and she's BANNED from usin' magnetic escalators. The magnetic force can cause the pacemaker to fire off. Think Taser but inside your chest).
Still... I'm more worried about one of the unknown NEAs hittin' us. We're way past due.

Oh, last thing about the solar EMP, it has the potential to the catalyst to the flippin' of the Earth's magnetic field. Don't say that can't happen, Earth's magnetic field has reversed before.

it has yes. but scientists aren't sure if that would either cause global chaos or just be a slight nuisance.

    http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/animals/man-sentenced-kitty-porn-case

The Article wrote:Griffin, investigators noted, added that, “sometimes he would leave the computer on and his cat would jump on the keyboard and he would come back to the computer and find strange things on his computer.” He did not further describe how his talented cat succeeded in downloading these “strange things,” or what he did with these files.

    I laughed.

Does this signal the rise of the cats?! They now know how to throw off the shackles of their enslavement by downloading kiddie porn onto their master's computer! Who's cat will send them to jail NEXT?!

Seriously though, I'm glad this guy got more than 12 years. Also, the only thing my cat ever types is random gibberish.

So...apparantly some 19 year old college kid recently saw that the google instant thingy and bet his roommate that he could program that in a day. He did, and Youtube Instant was born. Apparently the vice-president of Youtube offered him a job over Twitter. Look for it in Cnet. I read it, but I can't look for it at the moment.

    Youtube: owned by Google.

Youtube implements software similar to software recently developed and implemented by Google.

    COINCIDENCE? O:

Google employs some of the smartest people on the planet. I sincerely doubt that a 19-year-old programed a version of google instant in one day, by himself, without looking at any of the source code that Google produced.

Hoboken man charged with simple assault after girlfriend tells police he beat her with a cat and punched her in head during argument

The Article wrote:HOBOKEN - A 49-year-old Hoboken man was busted Tuesday after his girlfriend told police he beat her with a cat and punched her on her back and head, reports said.

Dispatched to the 300 block of Marshall Drive at around noon, Hoboken police interviewed a 20-year-old Jersey City woman who was crying and told them that her boyfriend punched her a few times and hit her with a "feline cat," reports said.

She said she had lower back pain and pain in the back of her head, reports said.

Police arrested Lasalle Davis and charged him with simple assault, reports said.

The woman told police that she and Davis had been dating for two years and he got mad when she didn't call him the night before, reports said.

When she came to Hoboken to visit her sister, he showed up, yelled at her and grabbed her right arm, reports said.

She told him she no longer wanted to date him and that's when he picked up the cat and hit her, reports said.

She declined to speak to a member of the Hoboken Police Department Domestic Violence Team but did want to file a restraining order against Davis in Hudson County Superior Court, reports said.

Police did not know the whereabouts or the condition of the cat.

Davis' court date is set for Oct. 27 in Hoboken Municipal Court, police said.

This is so wrong on so many levels. Spousal abuse, check. Animal abuse, check. Stupid reason to get mad, check. *sighs*

... I guess you could say he pussy-whipped her, though.
