That's a pretty cool historical tidbit, Teasealot. I knew Star Trek had a big hand in the development of the Sci-Fi genre, but I never knew they did overtly political stuff like that.
I imagine that whoever was writing the checks for the film wanted to appeal to the youth demographic and decided that a romance element would pay off at the box office. Damn producers. I still haven't seen it, but Uhura is the only female in the core crew, so unless they made a completely new female character (and screwed up the canon storyline) they were pretty much stuck with her.
