A volley is all of the guns firing at once. To one volley something is to kill something in a single volley.

Consider that a cruiser in EVE has 3500 HP plus resistances whioch bring it to 14000 effective hit points. So yah that is a lot of damage from an alpha.

There are different grades of equipment. SOme you have to find, the better the gear the harder they are to find.
Civialian (Given to you)
Tech 1 (Built)
Tech 1 Named (Found in missions as salvage)
Tech 2 (Built but with rare materials)
Faction (Found off faction pirates or bought off the Loyalty point sword)
Storyline (Gained after completeing COSMOS missions)
Deadspace (Found in Complexes in low sec and null sec space, very rare)
Officer (Found of the rarest of all pirates in null sec)
