Re: Official Video Game Thread
Am debating on getting an Xbox (the original) solely for the purpose of playing KOTOR 1 and 2. Damn things have been teasing me and my PS2 and I've been itching to play em for a while now. But my reserves are limited, for I am a poor college boy so I debate further still.

You can play KotOR 1 and 2 on the 360 if you have a hard drive.

The same kind as the computer store that doesn't sell computer bits.

Nope, but I have a friend looking into getting the bits and installing them.

Gawd, I'll admit he looks badass...exactly like he looks in the game. Eh, since Disney didn't screw up the Pirates of the Carribbean movies here's hoping they won't screw up this one. I will be severely pissed if they do. PoP is one of my favorite video game series...you better watch it, Disney.

Re: Official Video Game Thread
I suspect PoP will be the greatest success a video game converted to cinema will have ever seen, and will likely become the yardstick by which all video game->movie conversions will be measured. Not that that is hard to do, the standard is pretty low.
I think the chief things to consider here are-
Funding- Say what you will about Disney, but they bring the dollars, which translates to better cast, better stunts, and better effects. While this doesn't always mean better movie, its usually a good clue.
Fanbase- The fanbase for previous movies based on video games has been almost exclusively kids or young adults. I think PoP's ancient status will attract a broader group, particularly older groups of players and former players.
Better/more original setting- The most recent attempts at video game based movies came have very...well-tread settings. Max Payne's noir appeal might have had more traction had it not been competing directly with other noir style films, in addition to being based off of something relatively obscure compared to Batman or Watchmen. A time travel fantasy caper set in medieval Persia is very unique, and this alone may attract some viewers.
Of course, none of this accounts for whether or not the movie will suck horribly, or its level of faithfulness to the video games. I suspect it will be fun to watch because Disney is looking for a repeat of the massive success they had with Pirates of the Carribean, so they'll be interested in making it an entertaining movie first, before they worry over whether or not its faithful to the video game, which is the best approach, in my opinion.
I doubt it will reach the level of mass popularity that PotC had, if for no other reason than Jake Gyllenhall does not have the screen presence or persona of Johnny Depp, but I bet it will be a worthwhile movie to watch, if not very good. I think it will also be key to let go of the expectation that it will be a scene by scene remake of the video game of the same name (why someone would want that I have no idea).

I disagree. I'd rather not waste my life on this.
And the greatest success a video game converted to cinema ever was Silent Hill.

To this point. I think PoP will be better *and* more successful. Just my opinion. I had no intention of wasting your time.

Awww.
I actually kinda am. Hoping it'll be a harbinger of good things to come. More to the point, that movie makers may start taking movies based on video games more seriously (and therefore be nore considerate of the material when making the movie) if a quality production of that type has some mainstream success, particularly outside the commonly accepted gamer demographic (12 to 25 year old males). Probably wishful thinking on my part.

Hell, I'd go see it regardless. But I agree- I hope it'll set a basis for VG movies to come. Especially since Gears of War is in production.

Re: Official Video Game Thread
Well, the point I want to make is, though Disney wants to make it a Pirates of the Caribbean-like success, PoP is NOT Pirates of the Caribbean.
PotC is a Disney-created, Disney-owned thing. It was based on the ride in Disneyland. The ride didn't have too much of a real plot, hell it was a ride, so they had way more freedom to do what they wanted with the movies. There were some references to the ride in the first movie, but they branched off and made the trilogy.
PoP, on the other hand, is not Disney-owned. It's not even Disney-created. It has a pre-set plot. There are three games, but all of them already have a plot set out and characters pre-determined and designed. Disney has so much less freedom with this than they do with Pirates. With this, if they do whatever they want, they are likely to piss people off. They already have with me, being that they cast one of the whitest of white boys to play a Persian prince.
Being that Disney is also notorious for taking gritty things and making them nice (Alice in Wonderland, Bambi, Little Mermaid, Snow White, etc.) along with the fact that they just really don't make movies like they used to, I'm none too pleased that they have their mitts on this one.

Zomg. Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days came out today.
I, however, just downloaded it on Romulation.
I'm a bad person.
But it feels good to be cheap.

Hooray for patches! Game tried to best me with it's 'anti-piracy' feature by playing an infinite loop when I turned it on. Going in and changing the hexidecimal coding fixed that right quick though. ^_^
